the brics emerging economies top 200 universities rankings 2016London, 2nd December 2015: The Times Higher Education today released the 2016 rankings of the world’s best universities in the BRICS and Emerging Economies*. 16 Indian institutes found their place in this year’s ranking with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) Bangalore making its debut in the Top 20 (16th rank) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay makes the Top 30 (29th rank.) India is the 3rd best represented country in this ranking which which examines the leading universities in 48 emerging and frontier economies – including the “BRICS” economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa

China dominates the rankings, with its institutions occupying the 1st and 2nd places, 50% of the Top 10 ranks and 39 places in the Top 200. Taiwan comes a distant second with 24 universities in the Top 200 and India is the third best represented country. The 2016 rankings include 200 institutions from 35 countries, up from 100 from 18 countries in 2015.

Phil Baty, Times Higher Education World University Rankings editor says, "It is good news for India that 16 of its institutions feature in this year’s list of the best universities in the BRICS nations and emerging economies. However, India will have to work harder to compete with other developing nations, such as Russia, which have a higher proportion of institutions in the upper echelons of the table. India is the only BRICS nation without a university in the top ten.”

"These rankings are based on the same established and trusted thirteen performance indicators used to create the annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but they've been modified to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies. India spends less than 0.88% of its GDP on science research as compared to USA (2.76%) and South Korea (4.04%). With the population of young people in the country continuing to expand resulting in further pressure on resources, it is now more crucial than ever that India invests in research and strengthens its links with other nations. The government has spoken about improving its universities and promised to improve financial support but is yet to implement an initiative in this area. It will need to act, and fast, if it wants to match up against its fellow BRICS nations and other developing markets,” Baty added.
