IT minister assures Tamil Nadu students of placements

Salem: Information Technology Minister Ms. Poongothai Aladi Aruna, while addressing students after inaugurating a research centre for Photonics and Nanotechnology and Centre for Research and Development of Free and Open Source Software at Sona College of Technology, urged them to sustain a positive attitude towards job placements as the industry shows signs of growth.

Confirming the status of placements in the state, the minister assured students that, "Campus recruitment was operational in full swing all over the state as India and the entire international community had tied over the recession."

The National Association of Software and Services Companies projected that the worldwide spending in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) area would increase by 12 per cent.

Direct employment in the IT sector was expected to reach 2.23 million, an addition of 2,26,000.

She pointed out that, "Due to the easy availability of cost effective and quality talent, India would have a major share in this job pie."

Describing the advantageous position of the country's young demographic profile she pointed out that, "The country churns out more than 3.5 million graduates and postgraduates every year."

Entrepreneurship is the key to sustainable development as she emphasized that the students should be job providers instead of seekers.

Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam suggested that nanotechnology offered tremendous job opportunities as huge investments have been made in the subject across the world.

The Government of India and the Tamil Nadu Government also allotted funds for research in this field.

Inspiring students to take up research in the field of nanotechnology, he said that, "Nanotechnology applications were used in a number of fields like medicine and biotechnology."

Over 300 students who were placed in various companies were honoured during the programme. Regional Director of NASSCOM Purushothaman also spoke on the occasion.

College Chairman C. Valliappa, Secretary A. Dhirajlal and Principal P. Govindarajan presided over the function.
