Delhi: A book titled "Jail, Judges and Justice in Ancient India" authored by Shri S. Narain was recently presented to Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah, Hon'ble Chief Justice, Delhi High Court.

Speaking at the occasion, Shri Narain said that the book delineates the ancient judicial system followed in different periods of ancient India which was based upon "Dharma sutras", social conduct and ancient philosophy of life with merits like simplicity, affordability and speedy disposal. "The judges were known as "Dharamadhikari" or "Dharamavid" and were expected to exhibit a high level of accountability to pronounce justice without fear or favour. They were expected to lead a righteous life and attain salvation by their strict adherence to dharma in the discharge of their judicial responsibilities," he said.

Prof. P.B. Sharma Vice Chancellor, Delhi Technological University, who was also present on the occasion, informed that the system of justice in Ancient India was to uphold the Dharma and righteousness in society. "Strict adherence to truth and compliance to ethical and moral standards was part and parcel of the social order," he added.

Chief Justice Shah appreciated the attempt made by Shri S. Narain and remarked that the book is educative and person in sphere of law and justice should know the intellectual heritage of ancient India about which little is known to the common people.
