Book Launch by Katha at JNU explores relationship between Power an Translation Submitted By :- Suman Pokhriyal Monday, December 29, 2008 On December 21, 2008 Katha, an NGO aiming to spread the joy of reading, organized a launch of its publication entitled 'Translating Power', at the School of Language Literature and Culture Studies, JNU. Translating power is series of short stories & essays translated by renowned authors & scholars such as Dilip Ganguli, Meenakshi etc. The book explores the idea of power; how it works & how it can be resisted. Secondly it aims to looks specifically at some recent stories produced in different languages and translated into English to see how they depict and explore theses question of power. This book also explores how translation & power are related. David Barsamian, founder & director of Colorado based "Alternative Radio" released the book. Addressing an audience of scholars and students Barsamian commented that "Power lies in the hand of common people; it is only people who can get the solution of their problems". He reflected on issues such as "How does power work? Does it work through a simple repression by the one who has power of the won who has not? Or does it work through a much more complex network where the object of power, rather than merely repressed or coerced into submission, is encouraged to unwittingly consent to power working on him or her; to be indoctrinated to become a subject one's own exploitation". Barsamian as an American spoke out against an unjust world and while exploring his own and also the international perspective of "Power" aimed at visualizing one unipolar world. The program was indeed a treat for the audience who actively participated with their individual thought and ideas on the issue. |
