West Bengal teacher receives Rs.21.75 as salary

June 21, 2008

Kolkata: With India's annual inflation rate touching a 13-year high of 11.05 percent, a school teacher in West Bengal is being paid a salary of Rs.21.75 every month.

Though, Mr. Pranab Kumar Sengupta has won several court cases against the Primary School Council of the state's education department, he has not been able to receive his salary as per the present pay scale.

Sengupta has been working as an assistant teacher at the Basak Bagan Primary School since March 21, 1973 and has been drawing the paltry amount as salary ever since.

A division bench comprising Justice Ashim Banerjee and Justice Tapas Giri rejected an appeal by the North 24 Parganas district Primary School Council against a contempt petition filed by Sengupta against the council for not paying his dues.
