| Vidya Bhavan becomes bilingual to monolingual May 12, 2009 Santiniketan (West Bengal): Students studying at the institute of humanities of Visva Bharati University have been asked to write their exam only in English. Till now, students could write their exam either in English or in Bengali. "English has been recommended by High Level Committee (HLC) and Academic Council as the medium and may now be implemented," said R .K. Ray, Vice Chancellor, Visva Bharati University. The HLC was headed by Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi. HLC said in its recommendation, "Visva Bharti's should protect and preserve Bangla literature but at the same time English will connect it to the wider world of scholarship. It will also benifit the non- Bangla students as English has become compulson to make a significant mark in life." |
