Kolkata: The West Bengal Government will no more enroll students from other states to its six govt. run engineering colleges. It has also decided not to hold the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) in any state, except in Agartala.

"Following the example of medical colleges in the state, government engineering colleges will now give admission to only those students, who are residents of the state," said state Higher Education Minister Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury.

After a meeting with the vice-chancellors of Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Jadavpur University (JU), West Bengal University of Technology and principal secretary of the higher education department, the education minister said the decision has been taken to conduct a hassle free examination.

Mr Chowdhury said that an outside state centre at Agartala will be retained to facilitate the entry of students from the North Eastern states. However, students from other states can take admission into private engineering colleges.
