Students allege ragging in Punjab college

Lucknow: Two engineering students of a college in Punjab have alleged physical abuse by seniors and registered a case of ragging in Uttar Pradesh. The two ran away from the college and came to Kanpur a few days ago, police said on Friday.

Anand Mohan Dey, a resident of Kaushalpuri in Kanpur, managed to escape from the Guru Teg Bahadur Institute of Engineering and Technology (GTBIET) in Muktsar, Punjab with one of his friends.

"Dey and his friend have alleged that senior students of the GTBIET were abusing them physically since they took admission in the college in 2008," Superintendent of Police Ram Lal Verma told sources on phone.

The students said their seniors used to force them to consume liquor and singe them with cigarettes when they refused to follow their directions. They also alleged that the seniors used to assault them sexually and make them parade naked on the college premises, Verma said.

Dey and his friend, who is from Himanchal Pradesh, decided to run away as the college officials paid no heed to their complaints, police said.

"We were only given false assurances by the college authorities, who are well aware of the ragging incidents," Dey told reporters in Kanpur, 80 km from here.

The Uttar Pradesh police registered a First Information Report in the case Thursday night.

"Our deputy inspector general of police has spoken to senior officials in the Punjab police. They (Punjab police) have assured that stern action will be taken against the college authorities and senior students," Verma said. IANS
