PPP Model schools to be issued guidelines soon - Purandeswari

September 09, 2010

Hyderabad: The central government will soon be announcing the guidelines for the promotion of schools and other educational institutions that are operating under the public-private partnership model (PPP)

The task of finalizing the regulations for educational projects under the PPP mode had been assigned to the Planning Commission.

According to Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari, the commission has already finalized a plan and around 6000 model schools under the PPP mode are already on the anvil.

Purandeswari has participated in a meeting of CEOs organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Wednesday. D. Purandeswari said that the government would soon be introducing "Rashtriya Saaksharta Kosh" (national literacy fund).

According to Purandeswari, the proceeds of the fund would be utilized to give rewards based on performance to literacy achievers.

She informed that the government was currently facing a huge challenge to motivate 7 million odd volunteer teachers to agree to teach 70 million learners.

The government had not fixed a particular cash incentive or honorarium to be awarded to volunteers if they agreed to teach learners. However, volunteers would be expecting some sort of incentive in return for their contribution to the cause.

Purandeswari said that although there was no solution to the problem at the moment, the private sector on their part could contribute to the fund which could then be utilized to give incentives to volunteers.

Jagmohan Singh Raju, Director-General of the National Literacy Mission, said that the scope for the industries to contribute to the sector through their products and management practices was unlimited.
