Pilani: A humanoid robot, AcYut 3 designed by the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems at BITS Pilani, which won several awards at international competitions, will be available for public viewing at Ansal Plaza, Khel Gaon in New Delhi on July 10 from 6:15 pm to 8:15 pm and on July 11 from 10 am to 9 pm.
The AcYut team of five BITSians who designed the 92 cm tall humanoid robot will be present for explaining and demonstrating the humanoid at the event and also for interaction at the event.
Team leader Akash Gupta said that the AcYut will be performing its famous dance on a Bollywood song at the event, apart from manipulating objects and giving a demonstration of its soccer playing abilities.
"In order to increase public awareness on robotics, the team will conduct various activities on both days of the event to introduce beginners to the realm of robotics and illustrate the practical application of robots, especially humanoids, in high-risk environments, outer space, medicine, defense, and everyday life," said Akash Gupta.
Humanoids AcYut II and AcYut III won India's first Gold and Silver medals in Sumo category and Silver medal in freestyle demonstration category in Robo Olympics 2010, which is the biggest robotics event, held at San Francisco in the
United States.
It had also won a bronze medal in the Kung Fu category at the same event. Participants in Robogames included entries from 17 Countries. There were 59 events, 181 teams, 489 entries, 508 robots, and 667 engineers.
AcYut was the only one competitor to participate at this event from India. This puts India at the fifth position overall in the medals tally. Besides Robogames, the team has participated in various competitions including Robo One Japan, Ideen Expo
Germany and Korea Robot Festival.
Team AcYut has been working on this project since the past 4 years under the guidance of Prof R K Mittal of BITS Pilani. AcYut III, an improved version of AcYut II, was designed and developed in a span of one year at an approximate budget of Rs.35 Lakhs ($70,000) said Akash Gupta .
There has been tremendous enthusiasm and response to AcYut since the team started working on this project. The team has been invited to demonstrate in various countries. Some of the places where they have demonstrated so far include Stanford University, University of Louisiana, Carnegie Mellon University and New York Polytechnic College in the US, as well as other institutions in Japan,
Germany, South Korea and India.
Former president APJ Abdul Kalam, expressed his interest when he unveiled the AcYut II at Quark 2009, which was the technical festival at BITS Pilani, KK Birla Goa campus, held on February 7 last year.
"The event at Ansal Plaza in New Delhi is being considered as an all India launch of AcYut III for public viewing," said Akash Gupta. He added that the launch would be done in close association with Grey Orange Robotics Pvt. Ltd, a BITSian startup by former and current Team AcYut members dedicated to raising the level of robotics in India.
"Based on its extensive exposure to robotics and research conducted at various Universities in
USA, South Korea and Japan, the team plans to launch an educational initiative for young school going children by visiting various schools of the country," said Gupta.
