Satellite to link Punjab medical students to AIIMS, PGIMER classes

Chandigarh: The Government of Punjab has made special arrangements for MBBS students in the Government medical colleges in Patiala, Amritsar and Faridkot to access the classrooms of the All- India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh through satellite.

"We have a telephone hot line and Internet connection with the AIIMS. We have made classroom access arrangements via the satellite," said Jagjit Puri, Secretary, Medical Education and Research Department.

He further added that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) provided them the satellite facility to connect the medical colleges with the PGIMER.

Through this satellite facility, students will be able to ask questions to the teaching faculty of AIIMS and PGIMER. However, their queries will be answered later.

Technical problems have, however, delayed the link-up between PGIMER and medical colleges of the state.

Medical colleges in the state will also have access to the proceedings of the International seminar on Orthopaedics being organised by AIIMS in Delhi.

Students and faculty members would also be provided to access the operating theatres at AIIMS and certain other important institutes, he added. Hotlines have also been provided to all medical colleges to consult doctors at the AIIMS and PGIMER for diagnosing diseases.
