New Delhi: The board of governors that took over the functions of the Medical Council of India on Tuesday said the process of giving licenses to new medical colleges will be complete by July 15.

Addressing media persons here, the board's chairman S.K. Sarin said the inspection of 81 colleges which have sought recognition is complete and all reports will be submitted to the council by Wednesday.

"Teams of three doctors each were sent to all 81 colleges. We already have the reports from 75 of them and the rest will be with us by Wednesday," he said.

The board, which took over MCI's remit on May 24, had asked the health ministry to extend the last date for verification of the medical colleges till July 15 from June 15 as scheduled.

Sarin added that the information of faculties provided by the colleges will be uploaded on the MCI website for public verification.

"All information, including the pictures and bio-data of the faculty given by the colleges, will be on the MCI website by Wednesday. It can be checked by the teachers and any misinformation can be reported to the MCI by July 2," he said.

The board, constituted following the arrest of MCI president Ketan Desai on graft charges, says reforms in the medical education sector are most important for addressing the problems in health care sector.

"We have made 13 working groups which will review the whole situation in both under graduate and post graduate streams and suggest the required reforms," Sarin added. IANS
