New Delhi: In a recent move, the Medical Council of India (MCI), which regulates the medical education in the country, has proposed to conduct a national entrance examination for admission to MBBS course.
As per MCI 290 medical colleges, including private and government-run will be the part of this proposed entrance examination.
"We are planning to introduce single national entrance examination instead of multiple entrance examinations to offer fair and transparent selection procedure based on merit," said a MCI official.
The proposal to conduct single national entrance examination has been sent to the Health Ministry on June 24. The Supreme Court has also mandated a common entrance test.
"A national regulatory body should conduct the single national examination," says MCI in its proposal.
At present, some government colleges reserve 15 per cent seats for students from across the country and the remaining 85 per cent seats are filled by students from that particular state based on a merit list.
