Hindi film in US varsity syllabus

Washington: Pune-based writer-director Kranti Kanade's first film, 'Mahek', will now be a part of a reputed US university syllabus.

Otterbein College (Ohio) will screen the Hindi movie as a part of the curriculum syllabus of its Integrative Studies Programme and the teaching of 'Modern India'.

Mahek, a little girl's journey towards self-realization, boasts an exceptional performance by Shreya Sharma in the lead role. It is the story of an eleven-year-old girl who is a serious daydreamer. She dreams of being important and successful, but when she wakes up, the unfortunate truth is that her real life is just the opposite.

One day she meets an old lady who claims to be a "modern fairy" and tells Mahek not to expect any magical solution, because the answer to her failures lies in her strength if she could only identify it.

Mahek doesn't know what she is good at other than daydreaming.

The search through both daydreams and reality leads Mahek to her success and to an important lesson about growing up.

The film, produced by the Children's Film Society of India (CFSI), has been stealing the show at various international festivals. It bagged the Best Film award at the 10th Arpa Film festival, Hollywood and the Best Film (Family) Platinum Award at the 41st Houston Film Festival. It also premiered at the 51st London Film Festival 2007 to affectionate reviews.

Various other films including Aparna Sen's 'Mr & Mrs Iyer', 'Namesake' based on Jhumpa Lahiri's novel and Richard Attenborough's 'Gandhi' have also been screened at the varsity.
