March 12, 2009

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia is making its presence felt not only in India but internationally as well.

Jamia's alumni, Loveleen Tandon walked the red carpet on the 81st Annual Academy Awards for the movie Slumdog Millionaire as its Casting and Co-director.

Another team from the same institute will be part of Cannes next month.

Farhat Basir Khan, Professor of Media and Communication at the Mass Communication and Research Centre (MCRC) at Jamia along with his two students Neal Kartik and Pranab Kumar Aich will represent Asia at the Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA) in Cannes.

The SWPA has taken an initiative "Student Focus" to provide opportunity to the Universities and its students to get hands on experience in the profession. The programme extends to the entire world.

In this unique competition, students have to submit photographs on the environmental issues faced by their country. Ten countries are involved from each continent with one university representing each country.

The two winning students along with their professor from each continent will fly to Cannes for workshops and lectures during this fest on April 14-19.

The Jamia team won the top spot for the Asia continent after beating other top universities from nine countries. Students presented the pictures of extensive deforestation in Orissa.

They will now attend the "Grand Finale" at Cannes and endeavor to bring home another honour of the World Photography Award.

Prof. Khan feels it is a proud moment for both India and Jamia. "After the arrival of digital technology, this is the best time for photography in India. Indian photographers never had better time than this as their work is being appreciated internationally and being displayed in some of the best galleries across the world," he said.
