New Delhi: A 20-year old student of Lady Shri Ram College had gifted a short poem to Hillary Clinton, when she visited India in 1995 as the First Lady.

The poem touched the right chords with Clinton and she was so impressed by the gesture and the poem that she often narrated the lines of that poem in her subsequent speeches and even mentioned it in her autobiography.

Around 14 years later, Clinton wanted to tell the student that how much difference that poem had made in her life.

Anasuya Sengupta, a writer and activist, the girl who wrote the poem for Hillary was a special guest at the talk delivered by Clinton at Delhi University (DU) on Monday.

When Anasuya was sitting amidst the audience, Clinton took this opportunity and started reciting a few lines from the poem "Silence" and proudly announced that the person who wrote this poem is amongst us this morning.

Unaware of being acknowledged publicly, Anasuya said, "I was incredibly touched and humbled by this gesture from a person of her stature."

Anasuya is currently pursuing her PhD on police in India and is residing in the US.

She will join the Asia Oceania Global Fund for Women as its director from August 2009.

Anasuya reminisces that Clinton was expected to visit LSR in 1995 but was unable to make it due to security reasons.

So the then College Principal, Meenakshi Gopinath, asked her to write a poem to be presented to Clinton.

"I wrote on a topic close to my heart. My friend Alpana beautifully calligraphed it before it was presented to her," Anasuya said.

When Clinton first released her autobiography in 2003 and mentioned about the poem in one of the chapters, Anasuya shot to fame instantly.

"Last Saturday, I received a call from the US embassy informing me that Ms Clinton wanted me to be present in DU. How could I refuse them?" Anasuya said.
