July 25, 2009

Vadodra: The Supreme Court has permitted the affiliation of Maurus College of Dentistry (MCD) with Bhavnagar University (BU).

The college was started in 2003 by ex-mayor of Vadodara Dr Rajendrasinh Rathore on invitation from Mauritius government.

"The state government, ministry of human resource development, ministry of external affairs and health ministry had given necessary permission to start dental college," said Rathore.

A show cause notice was issued by the state health department in January 2006 to acting vice-chancellor of BU, B K Oza saying why the affiliation given by the university should not be cancelled.

Rathore filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court asking the affiliation of the college to BU should not be cancelled.

An order was passed by Supreme Court on July 13 stating that counsels of both Union of India as well as BU have accepted that a statutory inspection was conducted and the college at Mauritius was found running properly with requisite infrastructure and the recognition may be given.

BU has also no objection in giving affiliation to the college, the order states, adding that the petitioner-college shall be taken as affiliated.
