SAARC varsity to come up at Maidan Garhi

New Delhi: By August 2009 New Delhi will be home to prestigious university that will primarily address the educational from South Asian Association for Regional Coorporation (SAARC) countries at Maidan Garhi.

The upcoming university will provide specialized knowledge centering on the heritage, culture and politics of the SAARC member countries. Besides, the University will also impart professional schools and graduate study school.

The decision on establishing this first if its kind varsity was taken during 14th SAARC summit, held at New Delhi.

Delhi Development Authority (DDA) after viewing several sites zeroed in north-west Delhi. The ministry of External Affairs has provided the approval to a 100-acre plot situated at Maidan Garhi in South Delhi, a place with proximity to Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

According to a senior official, DDA, "The recent proposal to change the present land use of above referred plot from agricultural water body to institutional body is being launched for sanction before the DDA Board on Wednesday".

It is expected that the unique varsity will act as a platform for students and faculty from all SAARC countries namely, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka and Maldives.
