Quota implementation, a priority for Govt.

New Delhi: The on-going reservation issue seems to occupy the top agenda for the government as it is expected to issue a formal order to the central education institutions by the end of the week.

Now the HRD ministry is to issue a formal order where the govt. will try to resolve the creamy layer issue.

The need for such a decision becomes imperative in the backdrop of the fact that the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have put their admissions-processes on hold.

Prior to this, IIMs were supposed to declare their final admission list on April 11. IIMs require six to eight weeks to complete their admission process that is from the time they announce the final list to starting off the academic year.

Given the fact that IIMs start their academic calendar around mid-June or June-end, the government will try to work out a formal order for the new reservation quota as soon as possible.

It's also expected that the issue of cut off marks for the OBC quota selection would be left to institutions to decide. This would imply that while University Grants Commission would have a say in deciding the eligibility criteria for OBC quota for students to the Central universities, the IIMs, NITs, and IITs would be given a free hand to choose it for their group of institutions.
