New Delhi: A candlelight condolence meet was organized at the Jawaharlal Nehru University on Tuesday in memory of the victims of Monday's Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district in which 31 people were killed.

Organized by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the meet was attended by students and teachers from the university.

Talking to the sources, ABVP-JNU secretary Vineet Chaturvedi said the meet aimed at cultivating mass opposition towards Maoism and its supporters.

"We are against the ideologies which are responsible for such incidents (Dantewada attack)," Chaturvedi said.

"We want to cultivate a common perception against Naxalism which is disturbing internal peace," he said.

Chaturvedi also urged the home minister to take stronger steps against the Maoists. "We appeal to the home minister to step up the offensive against the Maoists as they are the biggest threat to our democracy," he added.

An official release issued by ABVP carried an "appeal" to the students to "isolate the supporters of Naxalites on the campus".

"There are many students and teachers in JNU campus who are supporting and giving ideological back-up to the Naxal terrorists. There is also a student wing of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) active on the campus. There are several students who have links with Naxal goons around the country," the release said.
