New Delhi: The CIC has fined
Delhi University's (DU) Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) for not providing information sought by an RTI applicant.
The applicant - Nitesh Duhan, who stood first in the FMS written test last year but was unable to get admission, asked for the information on the written test, group discussion (GD), extempore and personal interview (PI) marks of all the candidates who secured admission to the MBA programme.
The CIC's decision on charging a penalty of Rs.25,000 on FMS may have far reaching consequences for B-School admissions as several students may now start filing an RTI at
Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other institutes coming under the RTI Act.
CIC in June has issued a show cause notice to FMS - one of the top rated management institutes in the country for withholding data even though the query was filed a year back in April, 2008.
The commission has levied a fine on the institute's Public Information Officer and Dean J.K. Mitra of Rs.25, 000 the maximum penalty allowed under the RTI Act on Thursday.
But according to Mitra, "I have not received any such notice or copy of the judgment yet. Under such circumstances, it is better to not say anything as it is not appropriate."
However, the case has pushed the institute to take the decision to disclose the marks break-up of all the admission seekers in the future.
