New Delhi: Students aspiring to study at the prestigious St. Stephen's College of the Delhi University (DU) were in for a pleasant surprise on Sunday, when the college's first cut-off list was revealed.
The cut off list that was put up by the college on Sunday showed a drop of upto three percent for several of its courses.
Principal of the college, Valson Thampu, said that the cut offs are lower this year because of several changes that had been brought out in the college's admission policies that had aimed at decreasing the merit gap between students from the general category and Christian students.
According to the modifications brought in the admission guidelines on May 26 this year, the merit gap between the reserved and general categories cannot exceed 15 percent. The seats belonging to the Christian category that remain unclaimed would be shifted to the general category seats.
Although the cut offs are lower this year, students who clear them would still have to face the interview. The weightage that is given to class XII marks is 75 percent, 10 percent to class X marks and 15 percent to the interview.
More number of students would be called for interviews at the college this year as several students fail to show up for them.
The cut off marks for Humanities courses such as Philosophy (Honors) and History (Honors) this year are 85 percent and 91 percent respectively, which are lower compared to last year.
For science courses such as Physics (Honors) and Chemistry (Honors), the cut off marks remained similar to last year at 94.33 percent and 92.67 percent respectively. The reason stated for the Physics and Chemistry cut-off was that many students who have done well in their Class XII examinations have applied for these courses.
For the B.Sc. programme in Computer Science, the cut off percentage dropped by 1.33 percent to 92 percent.
The cut-off percentage for St. Stephen's English (Honors) course has also decreased by three percent this year.
