Delhi Govt introduces 'Chalta Firta' schools for children

February 11, 2008

New Delhi: The Delhi Government has launched a 'Chalta Firta' (mobile) schools scheme for children living in difficult areas of the city. The scheme has been introduced under the government's flagship program - Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, aimed at universalisation of elementary education.

Two "Chalta Firta" (mobile) vans were flagged off by CM Sheila Dikshit on Sunday. These vans are well equipped with the basic infrastructure of a classroom along with a variety of latest teaching and learning aids like VCDs and learning kits.

The objective of this project is to provide educational facilities to drop-out school children and those living in red-light areas, construction sites, railway stations etc. Each school will be parked at four locations per day and ''classes'' will be held for two hours at each location

The ''mobile schools'' are being operated on a public-private partnership basis with an MoU having been signed between the department of education and the Salaam Balak Trust and an NGO called Butterflies, working for the children.
