DU students to get Unique Identification Tags
New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) is all set to go tech-savvy with the introduction of smart cards for students, which will hold the information about the student; like his admit card, library card or any other membership card for his lifetime.

The Unique Identification Tag (UIT) will be introduced from the new academic session, 2010-11, which will ensure details like course, year and marks scored available at the click of a button.

Students will be entitled with the tag as soon as they are enrolled in the university, which will help them track their chosen courses, timetable and marks scored.

The new system is a part of the larger process of refurbishing the resources of the university, which is also expected to meet the requirement of the semester system, which would be introduced from next year.

The semester system will provide the students with the option of choosing the interdisciplinary courses.

Without going into the realm of files and documents, the UIT aims to provide help to both the students and teachers to keep track of various courses and schedules online.

The students will be provided with a UIT number, which will remain with them for their lifetime. They can check their profile online even when they have passed out from the university.

"With the introduction of the UIT, the things will become easier for students as they no longer would have to stand in queues to pay fees or get the library membership card," said a highly placed source in the university.

"After the students, the cards will be issued to the teachers and the administrative staff to make the functioning of the university simpler and hassle free," he added.

The DU first introduced the idea of UIT a year and a half ago where the Vice Chancellor had formed an enterprise resource planning committee under which it was to be developed.

A global tender was floated among the IT firms such as HCL, TCS, and Wipro where the Wipro bagged the contract to develop the system.

All data transmission between the student and institution will be route through the tag. Teachers will be able to track the attendance, date of admission or the marks of students.
