DCE students experimenting on 'solar car'

March 01, 2007

New Delhi: Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) students are trying to design and build a car that runs on solar energy. The ultimate aim of the team is to make a solar car that is economically viable on Indian roads.

A team of twelve students of different DCE departments is now working on "Project Solaris" to develop a car powered by solar energy that will take part in the eight-day competition - held once every two years - beginning October 21 in Australia this year. The college is providing financial support for the project. The students have also approached the Union New and Renewable Energy Ministry for other funds.

"We are yet to register for the competition as we are expecting the Ministry to grant us the necessary finances soon. Our car has been designed on paper. We are almost done with the mechanical work. By April-end we plan to finish the car except the body work," says Piyush Arora, of the "Project Solaris" team.
