New Delhi: The Public Information Officer (PIO) of the
Delhi University (DU) in reply to an inquiry made by a student under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has revealed that the university has spend a whopping figure of more than Rs.1 crore while contesting as many as 1,061 cases in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court during the past five years.
The PIO informed the applicant that, "The university has spent Rs.1,11,52,042 since the year 2005 for a total of 1,061 cases contested by the University before the High Court and the Supreme Court."
However, when information on complete data of these cases were asked the PIO said that the University did not maintain any such list, but allowed him to inspect the individual case files.
Names of the lawyers who represented the University, as well as the fees paid to them since 2005, were also provided by the officer.
One of the lawyers has been representing the University in as many as 141 cases and he has so far been paid Rs.8,10,613 for that.
Another lawyer has been paid Rs.3,63,421 by the University for appearing in 129 cases.
Two other lawyers were paid Rs.8,76,274 and Rs.1,50,189 for appearing in 129 and 10 cases, respectively, the PIO said.
