Court endorses lowering age bar for recruiting teachers

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday upheld a Government notification of reducing the age limit for appointment of assistant teachers in state-run schools in the national capital.

The court also endsorsed the government's decision, which said a candidate for the post must have passed Hindi in senior secondary level examination.

With the latest notification, minimum and maximum eligible ages are 20 and 27 years respectively for the post. Earlier the maximum age limits were 32 for male and 42 for female candidates.

The court was hearing petitions challenging the notifications of Directorate of Education of May 2006 and Department of Urban Development's July 2007 recruitment rules.

While disposing of the petitions, the court asked the government to allow all candidates (who had passed the Elementary Teachers Education (ETE) course in 2006, 2007 and 2008) to appear in the examination for the post of teachers if they did not exceed the upper age limit as fixed earlier. IANS
