Parag Choudhuri

Moving to higher echelons

Parag Choudhuri
Parag Choudhuri is a happy man. He has just got enrolled at the IIT, New Delhi for a PhD in computer graphics. He has seen the fondest dream of his life come true, after years of yearning. And now this handsome young man, with intelligence writ large on his countenance, is simply rearing to go forward in life. Anyone would realise Parag is rather fortunate as intelligence is inherent in him, his father is an electronic engineer and mother is a post graduate in social sciences. However, inspite of his brilliance, Parag remains a modest person who is patiently waiting for his destiny to take him to places. His forte is his hard work and the blessings of his parents.

In an interview with www.indiaeducationonline.net Parag outlines his life, hopes, dreams and ambitions:

Tell us about your early life, education, family background etc.

I was born and brought up in Delhi as my family has been here for quite a long time. My mother is a teacher and my father is a Doctorate in electronic engineering, who was formerly in the Cabinet Secretariat and has now retired. I had an older brother who died in a mishap nearly twelve years ago. I completed my schooling from Ramjas School R.K Puram, New Delhi and then joined a civil engineering course at Delhi College of Engineering, from where I graduated sometime back

How did you get into the IIT?

Well, it was by sheer chance. You see, after graduation, I joined a computer company, Risk management Software India Pvt Ltd. Rather casually, I had sent my CV to the IIT requesting for an enrollment in PhD. I had also despatched my GATE scores to them. Surprisingly, I was called for an interview and finally selected for a course in PhD (computer graphics). However, since I have no formal M.E degree I have to work really hard and complete a number of courses which will bring me up to the PhD level.

What was your study routine like when you appeared for the class XII boards?

Well, (laughs)I concentrated on my studies and made a dedicated effort for the last 5-6 months before the examinations. On an average I studied for 8-12 hours a day. I never took any tuitions. I got immense help and cooperation from my parents.

What are your future plans?

I plan to finish my research and then take up teaching assignments at the IIT. However, meanwhile, I also plan to go abroad in connection with my research work. (pauses) It could be any country, Germany France or even USA. I am only particular that the place must have very good laboratories. Overseas travel will give me a lot of exposure indeed.

What would be your advise to all those students who are taking the board exams this year?

Concentrate only on your textbooks in all the subjects. You ought to know the books like the back of your hands. If you are serious about your work, then there is no need for taking tuitions. Secondly, whatever you do, never buckle under pressure. Study only of your free will and desire, never under pressure. You must be able to determine how seriously you need to work for each subject. Once this is done, the rest is easy.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I am fond of painting. I am rather fond of music (the softer kind). Moreover, I love to read a good deal of fiction. However, I have a penchant for science fiction.

Your idea of a perfect holiday?

To be far, far away from work, from studies and simply laze around, and be utterly free from the stresses of life.

Do you travel? What are your favourite destinations?

While I was at school, I travelled with my family during the summer vacations. I haven't really travelled much. In future, I plan to travel across India and even abroad. However, among the places I have visited, I found Leh was fantastic. I also greatly enjoyed my visit to Dalhousie.

What are the personal qualities which have helped you to succeed?

Well, modestly speaking , I have put in a good deal of hard work. Secondly, I never do anything half-heartedly. Whatever I undertake I endeavour to accomplish it with all sincerity. I am grateful to my parents for all their sympathy and cooperation.

Which personality do you admire/consider to be your source of inspiration?

First and foremost, I have great regard and admiration for my parents, to whom I owe a great deal. My father is extremely hardworking. It is my mother who taught me to overcome shyness and be forthcoming. Beyond that, in my chosen sphere, I have great admiration and regard for Walt Disney, the master animator and cartoonist! He has brought smiles to the faces of innumerable children around the globe.

Can you recall some dark moments of your life?

Career wise there has never been a dark moment. In personal life, it came when I lost my brother prematurely in a mishap.

Recount some of your memorable moments?

I can recall two of them . One occasion was when I won gold medals for my academics, one from the Delhi University, the other two from my college (Delhi College of Engineering). However, the most glorious moment was getting into the IIT. You see, my home is quite close to the IIT campus. Very often I would pass that way and have wild dreams about getting into the IIT someday. Now that dream has come true!!
