Chandigarh: This city now has a park aimed at stimulating the five senses of taste, sight, touch, smell and hearing. The needs of the visually impaired have been kept in mind while designing the park, a senior official said.

The concept of the sensory park, which was inaugurated here on Thursday evening, has been replicated from similar parks in Osaka, Japan.

“This park has been specially developed and designed, keeping in mind the different needs of visually impaired people. The foundation stone for this park was laid in December last year,” Chandigarh Home Secretary Ram Niwas said.

“We hope that blind students of this region will be able make use of this place up to the optimum level. We want them to visit this park frequently to add new experiences to their lives,” he added.

The 0.41-acre park has been developed by the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, spending an estimated Rs.1 million.

Many aromatic herbs and medicinal plants like jasmine, lavlena, albertine, mint, neem, tulsi, strawberry trees, bamboo, poppy, grape plant, chives and quince have been planted.

While developing the park, visually impaired children were brought there and their feedback and suggestions were recorded. IANS
