| Peace rally by OU students demanding Rosaiah's resignation January 22, 2010 Hyderabad: There are changing phases observed in the state's Osmania University as the volatile situation seen until yesterday turned peaceful recently with students taking out a peace rally from Arts College to the NCC gate. The aggression of students, aroused upon seeing the body of Venugopal Reddy, was subdued by Thursday although the slogans for Telangana were continued to be heard throughout the procession but they stayed away from being violent. The purpose of the rally was to protest the lathi-charge on students by the police. Alleging that Chief Minister, K. Rosaiah and Advisor to the Government on Public Safety, K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao were responsible for the police lathi-charge on students, they demanded their resignations. The protesters also demanded action against the police involved in the lathi charge. Interestingly, the police stayed away from the rally. The rally dispersed by noon as it culminated into a gathering at the Arts College. Marri Anil, a member of the students Joint Action Committee (JAC) said that the Home Minister, Sabita Indra Reddy should take responsibility for the police action and resign immediately. The police did not allow some teachers from private colleges to enter the campus who were interested to support the rally of OU students and later moved them to police stations. Students later staged a dharna at the NCC gate demanding their release. Mr. Anil said that JAC will not disturb the second and fourth semester classes beginning from January 22. Students will continue their protests, but at the same time will attend classes. |
